AMELIA ISLAND

Amelia Island is located 30 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida and just south of the Florida-Georgia border. Because of it's North Florida location, Amelia Island avoids much of the oppressive heat and humidity that plagues other areas of Florida much of the year. Since it is also tucked away in the eastern-most spot on the Southeast Coast, it has also avoided the hurricanes that impact other areas of Florida. In fact, Amelia Island has never experienced a major hurricane and only one at all in the last 100 years (Hurricane Dora, 1964).

Despite the fact that Amelia Island has been discovered in recent years, it remains a well kept secret and is largely unspoiled. It's natural attributes include miles of white sand beaches, pristine Atlantic Ocean waters, soaring sand dunes, glorious salt water marshes and stately moss covered oaks. This unique natural environment is home to a variety of flora and fauna including blue herons, ospreys, loggerhead turtles, dolphins and even the occasional whale, bald eagle or bobcat. This provides the perfect setting for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts who covet fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, boating or simply sunning on the beach.

It's little wonder that Amelia Island was ranked as one of America's Top North American Islands by Conde' Nast Traveler's Readers Choice Awards in 1997, ahead of Hilton Head, South Carolina, Sanibel, Florida and Captiva, Florida.

Amelia Island is also rich in history and stark in it's contrasts since it's discovery, more than 400 years ago. Eight different flags have flown over Amelia Island - the only place in the country with that distinction.
